TIMELY TIPS FOR ACTIVITIES
Summer

The Sentimental Digital Network consistently provides activity directors enjoyable elements to incorporate into their Activity Calendars. Here are some great tips as you complete your planning for the summer months, with emphasis on the patriotic holidays.

Line up our videos and excerpts with your calendar:

This package includes two full videos to provide summer fun. The first is from the Sentimental Sing-Along Collection, with songs like “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and the “Battle Cry of Freedom.”

The other is our Timeless Trivia program on cars, with fascinating old film and lots of fun questions and answers about the evolution of the automobile.

Most of the rest of the videos are shorter, between five and 10 minutes in length. These videos can be grouped together or used as just one part of a larger activity. They are great conversation starters.

Here are the video features:

1. Sentimental Sing-Along: Songs of Patriotic Pride

2. Timeless Trivia: Convertibles, Hot Rods & Classic Rides

3. Flag Day: This holiday originated in a small schoolhouse in Wisconsin, which still marks the day each year. Our video segment features talks with descendents of the man who came up with the idea, then follows the ceremony and community parade.

4. National Veterans Memorial: Columbus, Ohio is home to an impressive memorial and museum celebrating America’s veterans. It honors service members from all military branches, making it especially appropriate for Memorial Day.

5. Fort Snelling Ceremony: Memorial Day observances hold deep meaning at national cemeteries like this one in Minneapolis. Viewers see an honor guard, a rifle salute and witness taps, framed by the rows of stone markers atop the graves of veterans.

6. Marching Bands & Concerts: A variety of musical styles and sounds make up this On A Musical Note feature. There are brass bands, horse-drawn parades and even clown cars. It’s a smorgasbord of summertime performances.

 7. Famous Fireworks: The Rozzi family has been staging fireworks displays since the late 19th Century. Viewers learn the company history, with ample time devoted to just fireworks, ideal to enhance any Independence Day celebration.

8. Honor Flight: The Changing of the Guard at Arlington Cemetery is just one of the highlights of a trip to the nation’s capital for veterans. The memorials to Korean and Vietnam veterans are also featured.

9. Strawberry Fields: The operators of a farm called Berries & Blooms take full advantage of the strawberry picking season each year. Combined with fields of eye-catching flowers, this featured brightens up any activity.

10. Root Beer Stand: We found a root beer stand in Ohio that is a true throwback to the past that is sure to bring back memories. It is open only in the summer but draws lots of people who remember when, as well as young people making their own memories.
